SHOHEI OHTANI LOOKALIKE CONTEST
JAPANESE AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM

2020 - 2025
After seeing the lookalike competition trend take off, our social media manager decided she wanted to have a Shohei Ohtani lookalike contest. I had literally 30 minutes to make a flyer, which I personally plastered alllllllll up and down 1st St North and Sunset Blvd after work.

To our pleasant surprise, a few hundred people showed up to participate and watch. We eventually crowned an adult Shohei winner, as well as a surprise “Littlest Shohei” for a kid Shohei who showed up unexpectedly and stole the hearts of the whole crowd.

--

My favorite part of this entire ordeal was the instagram comment I received on my rendering of Shohei from @jwade35kd.

Being the nonprofit we are, we hadn’t budgeted for this contest, and there wasn’t enough money floating around to license an actual image of Shohei. Thus, I ended up hella fast-tracing him based off a photo from some lifestyle ad campaign he had done. I think I spent a total of 8 minutes on it, including the coloring.

Sometimes shit really doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be interesting enough that someone will spend so much time looking at it that they manage to come up with a deeply specific roast for it to share with the rest of us.
